Who Doesn't Love a Parade? - April 30, 2020
Human beings are a funny lot. Or at least we two – Laur and I – are. We are always trying to create a story to explain an event.
For example, on Tuesday, a bunch of trucks showed up in the church parking lot beside our old folks home. What? We suspected it could be a rally of “We want to go back to work folks!” But, no, there were balloons attached to the trucks. And happy kids inside them.
And then a fire truck showed up. I said to hubs, “I bet he’s there to disperse them. Police are too busy.” But no, the driver made a friendly siren noise. Hmm…
Then one of our residents – Archie (not his real name) - and his spouse came out and headed toward the parking lot. Laur remembered that Archie was a retired fire chief. “Ah,” said I. It’s a celebration of Archie’s birthday using social distancing. But he and his wife and their dog continued on their walk.
Hmm…
Laur and I started going for our walk just as the parade of trucks and cars, followed by the fire engine, started. We (I) decided to follow it. It headed down to a wee court. What? And then I saw signs, “Happy 8th Birthday Ian!” (Not his real name.)
I said to Laur, “I bet Ian has cancer and this is a way of making his birthday special.”
Horns were honking, the fire engine siren went off, folks were clapping and yelling. I joined in by whistling. Laurence said, “Jan this isn’t your party!” And led me back to our planned walk.
I spoke with some neighbours. I asked, “Does Ian have cancer?” And they assured me, “Oh no! It’s just his birthday. This is ‘a thing’ now due to Covid. We did this last week for our daughter.”
(Right now my Mom is thinking, “I could have two handsome firefighters show up for my birthday?!”)
Our anniversary is tomorrow – April 30th. We are celebrating 43 years of “matrimonial amiss.” We have been trying to think of some way to make the day special, but the restaurants and cinemas are closed.
Laur has offered to make us a special meal. By special, Laur means frying with prolific amounts of olive oil. If a fire truck shows up at in our parking lot, trust me, it won’t be there to celebrate our anniversary!
