Garmy and Me - June 8, 2019
Last Wednesday I went to visit my sweet friend AT who lives at Pleasant Manor in Virgil. I printed off a map and typed her address into my Garmin – double insurance for getting me there. Yes, it’s a very straightforward drive but yes, my brain only works in circles.
Getting to this fellow Seniors’ Community went just fine, but finding AT’s particular set of apartments? Not so much. I drove around the complex a few times before just giving up and trying to get in a door – any door – for nursing assistance. They have a Memory Care unit there somewhere - I’m surprised the staff let me leave! 😊
Next up, having a visit with my friend AG - my son-in-law Neal’s awesome mother. She lives in Niagara on the Lake, which is just a stones throw from Virgil. We agreed to meet up at the “I forget the name” Café. We have met there before so I thought I’d have no trouble finding it. So I didn’t print off a map, nor did I write down the address to plug it into my Garmin.
Hmm. I knew I had to get to Niagara Stone Road which Garmy helped me find. (It was a block away.) “Now do I turn left or right?” I cannot remember which way I turned, but whatever it was, it was the wrong way... I pulled over into a parking lot to use my phone to contact my son-in-law Neal to let him know I was lost and would he please call his Mom to let her know I’d be late – but for some reason there was no connection. (I neglected to write down AG’s cell number in my pocket planner. Old fashioned technology I know.)
Turns out I had pulled into the Trius Winery parking lot. Maybe I could use their landline to phone Neal? The door to the particular area I approached – this is a huge complex too – was locked. They weren’t ready to receive guests but I looked so forlorn that they let me in. (Ok, I was practically pounding at the door.) I explained my situation and they let me use their phone to call Neal - but Neal has this thing called “a job” and wasn’t able to answer. The gal also said, “Where are you going? I’ll find it for you on my phone!” And she did. It was the opposite direction on Niagara Stone Road. She said, “Just keep driving and it’ll show up on your right. You can’t miss it.” She has no idea…
(Are you feeling in panic mode right now? Don’t! Things work out OK, just a little late and very discombobulated. 😊)
Got there 15 minutes late. Neal’s mom had just texted Anna – requesting my phone #. Wouldn’t have worked anyways because our regular phone was at our apartment. I had our “emergency phone” and we can never remember its phone number. Thankfully Audrey is so very classy and forgave me immediately, and we had a lovely chat and fabulous decaf coffee and dessert at “I forget the name” Café.
I punched in my Vine St. address to get home. THAT I could remember. Garmy took me on a very roundabout route which she often does. I think I’m rubbing off on her. And she got me to the canal bridge at Carleton … just in time to see it go up … and now I had to wait for 30 minutes… Gah!
No worries, I have a church friend in Sudbury who I’ve been trying to reach – for a check in. This would be a great time to do this! This gal is very near and dear to my heart – she adopted a cat from me some 12 years ago and she sings in the choir at All Peoples United Church, my home church in Sudbury. But – what the heck? Where is my phone? No………….. I had left it at the Trius Winery in Niagara on the Lake. After what seemed eternity, the bridge came down and I was able to get home. I immediately looked up Trius on my computer and phoned them on my regular phone. Yes, they had it. Yes, they would keep it for me.
I hadn’t even bothered to say HI! to my hubs yet. He asked who I was phoning. I told him, “Trius Winery. I left my phone there.” Said he, lifting an eyebrow, “Do you normally go to wineries in the middle of the day?!”
My response was, “I doubt it I’d remember…”
