The Breakfast Comedy Club - June 15, 2019
While I don’t like things to go awry, a good Sunshine story depends on it. And I was counting on the Tuesday Breakfast Club to do just that. I – along with another volunteer - was going to be making grilled cheese sandwiches. If you’ve ever had one of my lovingly grilled cheese sandwiches, you’ll know it will be burned black on one side and barely warmed on the other.
I like to get to my “post” a half hour early because I befuddle easily. I need to get those windows open (being a woman of a certain age), empty the dishwasher, set up the cups and plates, and – oh right – check the menu. Good thing I did. It wasn’t grilled cheese sandwiches – that’s Friday’s menu. It was cream cheese on toasted English muffins.
No English muffins in the fridge or on the counter. Hmmm… Checked the freezer at the back of the room. Yep! Eight bags of them! Frozen English muffins do not toast well, so I microwaved them six at a time. And got the toaster oven going. It’s a commercial one like you see at Tim Hortons.
My helper had not arrived by 8 am so I just assumed I’d be winging it – which is pretty much what I do when I do have a helper. I’m not at home in the kitchen, as you’ve probably guessed.
One can set this toaster oven on a variety of speeds from very slow to very fast. Since I thought I’d be on my own, I opted for fast. Not a good idea – these puppies were coming out still lightly frozen, even after their time in the microwave. Turned it to very slow. Oh my goodness – I had 48 of these to do and the clock was ticking!
These came out a colour I am used to but my elementary school diners might not be fond of. A teacher came in and said, “You know, if my toaster at home put out that much smoke, my fire alarm would go off.” I finally found a happy medium and that is when my helper arrived.
And then T arrived… T says he thrives on pressure – does his best work under it. And it was true. While I was feeding the toaster oven and removing the now nicely toasted English muffins, he filled up the water and milk cups, cut up the apple slices, and started lathering the cream cheese (80%) or margarine (20%) onto the muffins. We were ready to go when the kids arrived.
We were supposed to offer them Wow Butter – which is toasted creamy soya nut butter. And this is something I should love – being a vegan and all. But also being a peanut butter aficionado, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Though I am going to order a free sample. https://wowbutter.com/consumer-sample-ca
You can see the trouble with that morning’s events, right?! Yes, nothing went wrong. In fact, everything – thanks to T – went super well.
Thankfully, I can still remember how the breakfast club went the week before… Mostly because I wrote it up that afternoon.

On Monday I was volunteering at the Breakfast Club alongside my very competent friend M. The menu was so simple – cereal and milk. At least that is what I read on the sheet on the fridge. And to my credit, that is what M read too – possibly because I got there early and told her that is what it was.
How far wrong can you go pouring out cereal and milk? Just ask Laur who cleans up after me on a daily basis in our kitchen. I refilled the cheerios container and neglected to make certain the lid was on tight. We had cheerios in the intended bowl and mixed in with other bowls, on the table and on the floor. M didn’t think it was a good idea to sweep the cheerios from the table and floor back into the container. I guess she never had breakfast at 465 Loach’s Rd. where cat and dog hair was considered added protein.
Next I tried pouring milk. And I hit 100% of the bowls 50% of the time. M offered to pour the milk. There were apples to cut up. M let me wash them but thought it might be best if she sliced them up.
The educational assistant who helps us showed up at some point during our preparations and pointed out that we were also supposed to offer toast and Wow Butter. That was the part I missed on the sheet. Ooops! It was a little late to start then… Some of the older kids came back three and four times for cereal seeing as the bowls were sized for toddlers.
I need to leave 5 minutes early in order to get to my exercise class. To my credit I get there 30 minutes early to empty the dishwasher and get things organized in a “jan” sort of way. As I was leaving a little lad accidentally dumped all his cereal on the floor, followed by his milk. I had filled both too full.
I see him as a future Breakfast Club volunteer in my image!
